Tell Senators Ernst and Grassley: Support temporary SNAP increase for Iowans
Act now to ensure Iowans facing crisis can put food on the table.
Lawmakers are right now considering whether to include a SNAP increase in the next coronavirus relief package. This smart and humane move — like what was done in the 2009 Recovery Act — will help prevent food insecurity among Iowans who face unemployment or a sudden drop in earnings.
Please email Senator Chuck Grassley and Senator Joni Ernst and tell them to temporarily increase the maximum SNAP benefit by 15 percent until the labor market recovers — with benefits set to automatically sunset based on economic conditions, not an arbitrary date.
Local food pantries are doing everything they can to feed Iowans, but the scope of the challenge is far beyond what nonprofit charities can do alone. We need the public sector to step up when the suffering is so great.
It’s good news that Senator Grassley has said he supports a temporary SNAP increase, although he has not specified how much of an increase or for how long. Senator Ernst has not yet said where she stands on this issue.
Thank you for standing up for fellow Iowans during this unprecedented crisis.
