Direct care workers on the front lines

Part 5: Direct care workers — nursing assistants, home health aides and personal care aides — fill essential roles in our communities, supporting hospitals, nursing homes, hospice homes and Iowans needing in-home care. In the wake of Covid-19, these professionals now find themselves on the front lines of the fight against the pandemic in Iowa. Despite risking their own health and safety to care for others, many direct care workers lack the resources they need to protect themselves and their loved ones from health and economic crisis. State and federal lawmakers have an obligation to better support these brave professionals.

In this episode of the podcast, Di Findley, executive director of Iowa CareGivers, talks with Anne about policy solutions the direct care professionals her organization represents need to meet and overcome the challenges ahead.

Said Di: "If anything good comes out of this pandemic, it might be that people finally realize how critically important these workers are to all of us."
